Subject:i hope this is still some what active..

I am considering going to Alfred this fall and i just wanted to know what some of the students thought about it *thats where you come in!*

so i guess i should tell you some things im looking for in a college and then you tell me if you think Alfred would be fitting or what you think of it, etc.:

Im looking for a college that has a good relationship/ invlovement with the community,
is at least some what enviornmentaly conscience,
has a lot of artsy, music, theater, hippie type kids,
a decent sized town (suburban-ish i guess) with stuff to do (coffee shops, places where local bands play, etc)
isn't huge but is still big enough where you probably wont know everyone.
good theater, art, music programs. liberal artsty kind of stuff.
pretty campus/ surroundings

umm thats all i can think of right now :P, any help is appreciated! <3

I'm a freshman engineer, just to let you know.

It seems like Alfred would fit pretty well, from your criteria. The community is the college basically, plus the teachers. There are a lot of vegetarians and evironmentally consious people here, there's an environmental house you can opt to live in that's all about that sort of stuff. It's a big art school, so most kids are artsy and hippie esq. The town is one street, with a coffee shop and a calzone place. There's not much more. Though we get bands every weekend playing on campus and a few in the coffee shop. I'm a theatre and music person, and we have a small but good theatre and music program. Everyone knows each other and it's very accepting. I think the campus is pretty. I know a lot of people on campus, but not nearly every one.

I guess that's about it. If you want to know anything else, just ask.

rochester is only an hour and a half drive from alfred, and if you really really need to just get away from the middle of nowhere, that's one place to head. Plus there's buses to NYC, etc.

the town is seriously probably... 8 stores. there is a 'village' sized town about 15 minutes away, with a discount movie theatre and friendly's and a few other resturants, but not much else.

there is a REALLY nifty little wine store around the corner, and it's by a small organic food store... if i ever drive out that way (i graduated in '02).. i would have to stop and go to the wine store for blueberry wine and raspberry wine :)

and yes, like the person above me. there's a lot of snow. we had a blizzard my sophmore year and everyone but my class got the day off (It was 2+feet, teachers couldn't get in, save for ours) and we had to trek through the BLIZZARD to class for 3 hours.
